Police say they wil not be able to meet a surge in demand for passports from Swedes trying to get their applications in before the new passport law and procedures come into force on Saturday, October 1st.

The waiting time now stands at between 10 and 12 days instead of the usual five, according to a press release from the National Police Board.

The new passport is designed to be more secure and the price is going up from 270 kronor to 400 kronor.

Police say that although they will not be able to clear the backlog before Friday everyone who sends in their application this week will receive the new passport at the old price.
