An 18 year old Swede appeared before a court in Turkey on Tuesday accused of desecrating the Turkish flag, according to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We presume that these court proceedings were for the issue of the arrest papers," said Sofia Karlberg at the foreign ministry's press service.

The man was arrested with another, younger, Swede during the small hours of Tuesday morning. According to the tabloid Expressen, they had cut down a flag from a flagpole in Alanya. The younger boy was released due to his lower age, said the foreign ministry.

The General Consulate in Istanbul is now dealing with the case.
