Sweden's customs authority has said that it is tightening controls at a number of the country's airports for travellers from Turkey and Romania, where several cases of bird flu have been confirmed.

The move is aimed at preventing "live fowl, poultry meat, poultry products in foodstuffs, eggs and feathers" from entering the Scandinavian country, Swedish Customs said in a statement.

"Because of the outbreak of bird flu in Turkey and Romania, Swedish Customs has tightened its controls" at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, Landvetter in Gothenburg, Sturup in Malmö, and five other airports that have direct flights to Turkey.

There are no direct flights between Sweden and Romania.
