The 21 year old woman is said to have life-threatening injuries including skull fractures and internal bleeding. Doctors at Helsingborg hospital's intensive care unit described her condition as 'uncertain'.
According to Charley Nilsson, information officer at the local police department, much remains unclear about the incident. The emergency services were called out just after 10pm by a neighbour who heard a thud outside. When the police unit arrived at the scene they found the woman lying on the ground with the 24 year old and another man beside her.
Both men were taken to the police station in Helsingborg for questioning. Just before 3am on Monday the second man was released but the 24 year old was kept in custody.
He has been informed that he is suspected of attempted murder.
The couple, who have a child together, live on the third floor and it appears that the woman fell from a window in their flat. However, the police were unwilling to divulge their specific reasons for holding the man.
It is not clear how many people were in the apartment at the time of the incident.
"During the day we will carry out a forensic examination of the scene and interview the couple's neighbours," said Charley Nilsson.
