Sony Ericsson has overtaken South Korean LG Electronics to become the fourth largest mobile phone maker in the world, according to a new report from analysts Gartner.

The Swedish-Japanese company increased its share of the international mobile phone handset market to 6.7 percent in the third quarter, up from 6.2 percent in the second quarter. LG's market share was 6.5 percent.

Gartner credits strong demand for Sony Ericsson's Walkman phones and camera phones for the upswing in the company's fortunes.

Market leader Nokia saw its share of the market rise to 32.6 percent, up from 31.9 percent in the second quarter. World number two Motorola increased its share from 18.7 percent, with third placed Samsung's share falling to 12.5 percent from 12.8 percent.
