Four Swedish peacekeepers were wounded in an explosion on Friday in Afghanistan, the Swedish military said in a statement.

"Today at lunchtime four Swedish soldiers were injured in connection with an explosion in Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan," the military statement said.

The four were transported to hospital but the details surrounding the last remained unclear. Their families has not yet been informed.

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesman in Mazar-i-Sharif Riccardo Cristoni told AFP that "four soldiers were wounded, two seriously who are now being taken to our military hospital in Kabul, and two others were slightly injured."

The Swedish troops were from the NATO-led ISAF, which was set up in 2001, and are part of a British provincial reconstruction team.
