The government has also decided that a Swedish expert will be employed at the newly established coordination office. The intention of the so-called Donor Coordination Mechanism is to contribute to a more strategic approach in the reconstruction efforts of Iraq and to promote the efficient use of assistance funding in Iraq, the government says.
Sweden will give the contribution to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which, together with the Iraqi Ministry of Planning, is in charge of the project.
UNDP, as the UN’s global development network, is the task manager for four of the ten clusters that have been created to manage and give direction to the UN’s activities in Iraq - governance and civil society, mine action, infrastructure and housing and poverty reduction and human development.
Iraq’s reconstruction, as assed by the United Nations Development Group (UNDG) and the World Bank Group, is estimated to cost $36 billion between 2004 and 2007.
