An 81 year old man who in August stabbed his wife to death at their home in Sundsvall has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for her murder.

The appeal court in lower Norrland reduced the man's original sentence after he appealed, arguing that the crime should be classified as manslaughter.

But the appeal court upheld the district court's verdict of murder. Normally that would carry a minimum sentence of ten years, but the appeal court took into consideration the man's age and cut the sentence from eight to seven years.

The man has not been able to give a reason for killing his wife of over fifty years. A psychiatric analysis has shown that he was not psychologically ill at the time of the murder.

Should age affect sentencing? Discuss!
