Swedish white goods giant Electrolux could close its Torsvik factory in southern Sweden, meaning the loss of 190 jobs. The confirmation from Electrolux's board that Torsvik could close came as the company announced the closure of its AEG factory in Nuremberg, Germany, leading to 1,750 redundancies.

The company's announcement that it was considering closing the Torsvik factory came after a board meeting on Monday. Workers at the plant, near Jönköping in the southern county of Smäland, said they were not suprised by the move.

The factory had been singled out early on as a potential victim of Electrolux's savings program, in which the company had said that “thousands of employees in Europe and the United States” would lose their jobs.

“This wasn't exactly expected...but it wasn't unexpected either,” said union branch chairman at the factory, Bo Rothzén.

The Torsvik factory produces mainly smaller appliances, such as compact dishwashers. Rothzén refused to speculate over whether there were alternatives to complete closure of the plant.
