Swedes are still opposed to joining the euro and the gap between those in favour and those against has almost doubled since May, according to Statistics Sweden.

Opposition to the euro is now dominant among men, although women remain more firmly negative towards the currency.

If a referendum were held today, 49% would vote against and 36% would vote in favour. That compares to 46% and 39% respectively six months ago.

The number who would vote in favour of the euro has declined among Moderate, Social Democrat and Green Party sympathisers.

As far as Sweden's membership of the EU is concerned, opinion has been stable since May, with more for than against membership.

The results were based on around 7,000 interviews carried out in November - before the troublesome negotiations over the EU's long term budget.
