Explosion risk in Halmstad
A large area around the Höganäs factory in the eastern part of Halmstad was evacuated and cordoned off on Monday morning after moisture leaked into a 1,200 kilo container of calcium carbide, creating a risk of explosion.
When it comes into contact with water, the substance produces the explosive gas acetylene.
The Höganäs factory is situated in an industrial estate and no homes were affected when the emergency services cordoned off an area 300 metres around the container.
The container has begun to swell and there is a risk that it will explode," said Börje Knutsson, team leader at Halmstad's emergency services.
The situation was being kept under close watch at lunchtime on Monday, as fire and police units waited for expert assistance to arrive at the scene.
"We will see if it's possible to measure how much the container has expanded by, so that we can assess the explosion risk," said Börje Knutsson.
