The E4 motorway northwest of Stockholm was closed at lunchtime on Thursday after a pile-up in poor weather conditions left at least nine people injured.

Police reported that 28 cars and 4 lorries were involved in the accident.

The E4 was closed in both directions near Märsta.

According to the emergency services, three people are seriously injured and several others were still stuck in their vehicles over an hour after the accident happened. Police believe that a taxi which skidded off the road caused the incident.

Helicopters, ambulances and road-clearing vehicles were involved in a major rescue operation which was still ongoing at 1pm.

The road had become particularly slippery throughout the morning despite having been salted earlier in the day and weather forecasters warned of worsening conditions throughout the day.
