The party is calling for a change to the Employee Protection Law, and wants to give the employer the right to fire a young person with immediate effect during the first two years of employment.
At the same time, a statutory redundancy payment of 8% of the salary should be introduced. The idea is to encourage employers to take on more young people.
“We must have a system in which young people can get a foothold in the job market,” said the Centre Party leader, Maud Olofsson to TT before the party’s annual local government sessions, which start on Friday.
The contract would give young people “the chance to prove themselves”.
“It’s slightly less job security during these two years, but it is a way for employers to test whether the company can bear the costs and whether these young people can contribute to the workplace,” said Olofsson.
The Centre Party leader rejected the suggestion that the proposal could backfire, scaring off the voters it is designed to help.
“I believe that young people say to themselves, ‘I’m ready to try whatever it takes just to be able to get a foot in the door somewhere’,” she said.
As support for its scheme, the Centre Party pointed to a similar employment contract introduced for young people in France. Such a system in Sweden, argued the party, could lead to 14,000 new jobs.
