Bergqvist breaks world record
Sweden's Kajsa Bergqvist set a new women's indoor high jump world record in Arnstadt, Germany, on Saturday with a leap of 2.08m, breaking a previous mark that had stood for 14 years.
The previous record was held by Germany's Heike Henkel, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic champion, who jumped 2.07m in February of that same year.
Bergqvist's new mark has only ever been beaten once before, outdoors, by Bulgaria's Stefka Kostadinova who jumped 2.09m at the 1987 Rome World Championships.
The 29-year-old Swede's jump not only broke the world indoor record but also beat her previous indoor best by six centimetres and surpassed her top outdoor mark by three centimetres.
The twice world indoor champion, world outdoor champion last year and European champion in 2002, sailed over the height at her first attempt.
"I was under pressure but from my first jump everything was working fluidly. It was a magnificent jump and I'm over the moon," she said.
