A Russian man suspected of espionage against Sweden was remanded in custody for another two weeks by a Stockholm court on Thursday.

The 29-year-old research student at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, was arrested on February 15th in the city and was initially ordered to be held in custody until March 3rd.

On Thursday however, the Stockholm district court said it had extended his detention until March 16th, when he is expected to be indicted.

Swedish prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand said last month that the 29 year old, who studied plants and plant viruses, had been spying on Sweden since January 2005 and that the espionage had harmed Sweden's "overall defence".

He did not say which country had received information from the man, who risks up to six years in prison if convicted of spying.
