Swedish hamburger chain Max says it is now bigger in Sweden than its global rival Burger King.

The company says it gained market share last year from both McDonald's and Burger King. Turnover rose by nearly 20 percent to 570 million kronor and profits rose to 65 million kronor.

"We have overtaken Burger King in terms of turnover, and we are now number two on the market after McDonald's," said chief executive Richard Bergfors.

"Things are continuing to go well for us, and we will have opened a further six restaurants by summer," he added.

Max intends to open 10 new restaurants in 2006, and says that within three years it will have 70 restaurants, compared to 40 today.
