Police have begun a murder investigation after parts of a dismembered corpse were found in a lake outside Södertälje on Tuesday.

"There are factors which lead us to suspect that a crime is behind this," said Tomas Ivering at Södertälje police.

The body parts were discovered on Tuesday afternoon in Södra Yngern lake, to the south west of Södertälje, reported Swedish Radio. Police were tipped off about the corpse by a member of the public.

"The police were directed to this spot and discovered the body in the water under the ice," said Ivering.

A Stockholm police spokesman, Lennart Nordén, said that the body parts appeared to have been stuck through a hole in the ice. He did not say whether they were from a man or a woman.

It is still unclear how long the body has been in the water.

The area has been cordoned off and police are examining the scene of the discovery. The body has been sent for forensic analysis.

"We're now going to work on interviewing witnesses - we have a few things to work with," said Tomas Ivering.
