Boliden mine application rejected

Boliden AB said its application to build a new tailings pond at its Åkulla mine in Sweden has been rejected, forcing it to put the mine's expansion on hold, pending an appeal to the country's Environmental Court.

This means output in the mining area will be down 10 percent from current levels in the first quarter of 2007, and copper and zinc production will be around 1 percent and 2 percent respectively below the levels it had planned.

The court ruling means 51 employees will be made redundant.

If its appeal is successful, Boliden said that it will be possible to compensate for the decline in production, at least in part.
