Man killed in wall collapse

A man died on Tuesday after a wall collapsed onto him at a building site in Gothenburg.

The collapse of the 300 kilogram brick wall left the man, who was in his thirties, crushed underneath it. He was taken to the city’s Sahlgrenska hospital from the site in the Hisingen district, but attempts to save him failed.

The dead man was working for a demolition contractor on the site, where former hospital buildings are being converted for residential use. The building is being carried out by construction firm Peab, but the man worked for a subcontractor.

Västra Götaland police say that the wall had a surface area of about 5 square metres.

Annika Spångberg, spokeswoman for Peab, said that the man was one of ten workers from the subcontractor demolishing the wall.

“According to the information I have, the dead man was standing on a ladder or something when the wall collapsed,” she said to news agency TT.

The accident will now be investigated by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket). Peab also plans an investigation.
