A 73-year old woman who yelled racial slurs at a 23-year old man has been fined for the offense by a Swedish district court.

The woman had called the 23-year old 'svartskalle' and 'neger', offensive Swedish racial terms. Resourcefully, the victim recorded parts of the exchange in his mobile telephone, and it was this evidence which proved integral to the conviction.

The crime occured last autumn, in a nature reserve in Varberg, 80 km south of Gothenburg, and included more than just a passing remark.

After initially casting racial insults at the man, the woman continued on her tirade.

"But what does a woman alone do out here when she sees a 'svartskalle'. What do you think she thinks then? It is strange that you can't even go around in Sweden anymore without becoming afraid," she is recorded as saying.

In reply to the victim's warning that he would report the woman to the police, the woman seemed confident that she would get away with her crime.

"You have no witnesses," she said.

But the victim had recorded the latter part of the 73 year old's outburst in his mobile telephone.

This evidence was presented in Varberg district court and helped to seal a prosecution.

In court, the woman admitted to calling the man 'svartskalle', but stated her comments were taken out of context.

In addition to the fine, the woman must also pay 5,000 kronor in damages to the victim.

The 23-year old was pleased with the outcome of the case.

Following the court decision, the victim told TV4 Halland that he hopes that the sentence leads to more reportings of similar abuses.
