The Dean of Stockholm Cathedral has resigned in protest after it emerged that the Swedish Church is sponsoring a photographic exhibition about Jesus.

Hakon Långström says that the display, which opens at Stockholm's Kulturhuset in October, is an insult to Christianity.

The theme of the exhibition is pictures of Jesus which have been bought by Kulturhuset and Stockholm diocese from The Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The Swedish Church has committed itself to a contribution of 300,000 kronor if the diocese adds 100,000 kronor.

Hakon Långström, who has been in his job for three years, reckons that many of the 70 photographs which will be on display are offensive.

"Money which has come from the Swedish Church's members is paying for this. I have to protest against that even if it is with sadness that I leave the job," he told Svenska Dagbladet.

Although some of the pictures have been removed from exhibition - a couple engaging in oral sex on the cross was considered inappropriate - the dean objects to images which include people hanging on the cross with exposed genitalia.

"Look at this one - a naked woman posing with a Mickey Mouse mask. The bishop really likes that one but I simply cannot stand for this," Långström told SvD.

The whole collection of pictures, including those considered too risqué to be put on display, will be included in book to be sold at the exhibition.
