Swedish Prison Service seeks porn ban

The Swedish Prison Service is appealing against a ruling that will allow prisoners convicted of sex offences to read pornographic magazines.

The prisons service wanted to forbid a man serving an 8 year sentence for rape in Härnosand jail from receiving pornographic material.

The authorities argued that use of pornography was not compatible with the therapy given to people convicted of sexual offences.

The district administrative appeals court (kammarätten) in Sundsvall ruled in March that the principle of freedom of information was more important than the potential threat posed by the prisoners being allowed access to pornography.

The Supreme Administrative Court will now make the final decision in the case.
