Sweden's star ice hockey forward Peter Forsberg announced he will not be available for selection for his country's World Championship campaign, Swedish daily Expressen reported on Wednesday.

Forsberg, who also plays for the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL, told the paper he needed surgery and would thus not be able to play in the tournament which begins on Friday in Riga.

Forsberg, or "Foppa", one of Sweden's key players, did not give details about the operation.

Earlier this year the star suffered from an aggravated groin injury which caused him to miss eight games for the Flyers prior to the Turin Olympics in which he participated and which his team went on to win.
