The accident happened at 11.30pm, on route 268 between Upplands Väsby and Vallentuna, about ten kilometres north of Stockholm. The truck carrying the elephants turned on its side as it tried to turn a sharp corner, injuring one of the animals. The other three elephants walked away from the scene.

Police said the three uninjured elephants stood eating grass in a nearby field while the rescue effort continued. Police helicopters and ambulances were sent to the scene, along with veterinarians.

All four elephants were later reported to be on their feet and were taken away in a new truck.

Both the elephant and the driver escaped with superficial injuries.
