The cakes, biscuits and coffee flowed generously as Astrid Zachrison celebrated her birthday on Monday. At the ripe old age of 111, she is Sweden's oldest person.

"You may well ask how my mother has become so old," said Per-Ivan Zachrison, who was born in 1928, to SVT's Småland news programme.

"But it's because of energy and vitality."

The celebration began on Sunday with a family party and continued on Monday with staff at the Österliden retirement home in Hollsbybrunn, outside Vetlanda.

Astrid Zachrison was born in 1895 in Fliseryd, west of Oskarshamn.
