Russia expelled Swedish diplomat

A Swedish diplomat was thrown out of Russia as retaliation for the arrest in Sweden of a Russian botanist researching at Uppsala university, it has been revealed.

The decision to eject the young diplomat was made several weeks ago and was met with strong protests from Sweden, Swedish Radio reported.

The Russian researcher was arrested in February on suspicion of passing information on research and researchers to his country’s embassy in Stockholm.

He was released after two months after it was decided that the information he had passed on did not endanger national security. He later had to leave Sweden, however, as his residence permit was not renewed.
