Rahid Alhajeh, a Swedish citizen who had been held in a Syrian jail since 16th June, was released on Tuesday, according to Sweden's foreign ministry.

Alhajeh, who was arrested by Syrian security police at Damascus Airport, had been accused of tricking a Syrian asylum seeker to insult the country in a television interview. Court proceedings against him had started last Tuesday.

The Swedish embassy in Damascus has been in contact with Alhaeh on Tuesday, but no further information about his release has yet been revealed.
