A man is feared to have drowned after jumping off the foot of the arch of Stockholm's Västerbron bridge.

The accident happened at around 4:30 on Friday afternoon. The man, who was reported by Dagens Nyheter to have been bathing with friends, jumped off the base of the southern end of the bridge into the water near the island of Långholmen.

Police said he landed with a belly-flop, and did not surface again. A large number of divers have searched for the man, but at 6:50 pm they had not found him. A friend of the man was taken to hospital suffering from shock.
