A seven year old girl who was hit by a train in southern Sweden on Friday afternoon died during the night.

The incident occurred just before 6pm near Burlöv, outside Malmö. Together with her parents and siblings the girl was by the side of the railway when the train came.

"They were out walking, the parents, the girl and her two siblings. As far as what happened is concerned, or how it happened, we don't know yet," said Lars-Olof Anderberg, spokesman at Skåne police, to TT.

When the police and emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident the girl had been thrown down to the road beside the track.

She was taken by ambulance to the University hospital in Lund with serious injuries. Doctors performed surgery on her stomach and one leg, but she died during the night.
