Mellberg: I will not play under Lagerbäck again

Olof Mellberg, former captain of Sweden's national football team, has said he will not play for his country again as long as Lars Lagerbäck remains coach.

Mellberg was booted out of the squad set to face Liechtenstein in Gothenburg on Wednesday after returning late to the team hotel on Sunday night. Fellow players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Christian Wilhelmsson were also thrown out the team.

Malmö-based paper Sydsvenskan cites Mellberg calling his ejection from the team “a miscarriage of justice.”

“I don’t intend to play in the national team again as long as Lagerbäck remains. We haven’t done anything,” he said.

The other two excluded players were also said to be upset by the decision to exclude them.

In an official statement on Monday night, Mellberg’s agent confirmed that his client had spent two hours at the Hotel Opalen in Gothenburg on Sunday evening.

“He regrets not following the timetable agreed on Sunday,” the statement said.

“Brozovic's Inter Milan and Swedish epidemiologists were informed about the positive test,” an HNS statement said.

The player's positive result came two days after defender Domagoj Vida was informed of a positive Covid-19 test after playing the first half of a friendly with Turkey in Istanbul.

Apart from Brozovic, 27, one staff member also tested positive.

They were both isolated from other members of the national team.

After Sweden, Croatia play another Nations League game against Portugal on Tuesday.

Croatia, runners-up at the 2018 World Cup, are third in their Nations League group which also includes France, the team that beat them to the World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and Sweden.
