A Swedish stunt pilot has died following a mid-air collision during a competition in Malta. Gabor Varga's two-seater plane crashed into the sea outside Grand Harbour during the Aero Grand Prix race.

The other pilot managed to eject safely from his plane and fell to the water with a parachute.

The cause of the accident is still unclear, but Gabor Varga's plane lost its tail in the collision.

Pilots from around the world were participating in the competition, which includes an air race, one-on-one dogfights and target bombing and flying duels. It was being shown on television in 100 countries, according to local paper The Malta Independent.
