‘Bomb’ at Social Democrat hut was fake

Police cordoned off a square in suburban Stockholm for several hours Saturday after a suspected bomb was found at an election canvassing hut, but the device turned out to be a fake, police said.

The incident occurred just one day before Sweden’s legislative vote.

The suspected device – according to media reports a plastic bottle with blinking lights and wiring – was discovered in the Stockholm suburb of Västerhaninge, outside the ruling Social Democrats’ wooden cottage used to distribute election materials.

Bomb technicians were called to the scene but established that the object was not dangerous.

On Tuesday, two petrol bombs were found behind another canvassing hut belonging to the opposition Liberal Party in Malmö, Sweden’s third city.
