Around 400 Thai berry pickers began a protest in Björksele, 40km north of Lycksele in southern Lappland, on Tuesday.

They are said to be disgruntled about their salaries and believe that local berry buyers have conned them, reported the Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

Thailand's ambassador in Sweden, Apichart Chinwanno, has visited Björksele to talk to the berry pickers and to find out more about the cause of the disagreement.

According to local sources, the Thais have gone on strike because tax and social costs have been deducted from their salaries. They say they were not informed that this would be the case before they came to Sweden.
