Swedish Meats says it plans to make hundreds of employees redundant from its plants in the towns of Helsingborg, Kävlinge and Malmö in Skåne, southern Sweden.

The company, Sweden's largest meat producer, plans to make the deepest cuts at Helsingborg, where 222 jobs will go. The Kävlinge plant will lose 149 jobs while 26 posts will disappear in Malmö.

The pig slaughter operation in Helsingborg will move to Kristianstad. Cattle slaughter will move to Kävlinge until a new, specialized cattle abattoir is opened in Skara in 2008, at which point the Kävlinge factory will close.

"Cooked meat products currently produced in Kävlinge will gradually be moved to the company's other premises," the company wrote in a press release.

As well as the changes in Helsingborg and Kävlinge, Swedish Meats will close a small packaging plant in Malmö.
