A Swedish mother and daughter and their Egyptian driver were killed on Friday when their car collided with a truck on the highway between Cairo and Upper Egypt, a security source said.

The father of the family was injured in the accident and underwent an operation late on Friday night in a Cairo hospital.

The couple and their daughter were returning to the capital after visiting a Coptic monastery south of Cairo when their car hit the truck near Fayyum.

A Coptic priest travelling with them was badly injured in the collision.

The other vehicle had been driving on the wrong side of the road.
