Treschow, who is also chairman of the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and Electrolux, has been chosen to replace Antony Burgmans, who is due to leave his post at Unilever in May, the Sunday Telegraph reports.

Unilever makes Wall's and GB Glace ice cream, Domestos, Flora and Becel margarines and other well-known household brands.

The choice of Treschow is expected to be confirmed early in 2007, according to Reuters.

"We are not commenting on the details, but we are in the final stages of the recruitment process," said a Unilever spokesman. Treschow's office told Swedish news agency TT that he never comments on speculation over potential job offers.

The search, led by Unilever non-executive director Lord Simon, has attracted intense interest amid investor concern that Unilever is struggling to complete its latest recovery strategy, the newspaper reported.
