Ulrica Messing is the latest Social Democratic candidate to reveal that she is not interested in becoming new party leader.

The chairman of Messing's party district of Gävleborg , Raimo Pärssinen, confirmed on Wednesday that she has decided not to run for the post.

Early favourites Margot Wallström and Carin Jämtin have already dropped out of the running.

Leading figures in the party have stated that they would like a woman to take up the helm, with Mona Sahlin widely viewed as the most likely candidate.

Sahlin has declined to comment on today's developments.
