Spendrups cancels conference after threats

Managers at Spendrups Bryggeri, Sweden's largest homegrown brewery, have contacted police after receiving a number of threatening anonymous letters.

Security concerns led the company to cancel a large sales conference in Malmö's Turning Torso building and the company has indicated that it will not participate in any further conferences until the threat has passed.

Company management received notification about the letters on Tuesday. They immediately informed all employees and took the decision to cancel all engagements at which large numbers of employees would be gathered at locations outside company premises.

A spokeswoman for the company, Caroline Ekman, told news agency TT that Spendrups has found itself in this kind of situation on a number of previous occasions.

"Yes, that is the uncomfortable reality. Many other companies have also been exposed to similar threats," she said.

It is the first time that conferences have been specifically targetted. Spendrups reported the threats to Stockholm police on Tuesday and will also carry out its own internal investigation.

"These are threats that we have to treat with the utmost seriousness," said Ekman.
