Police in southern Sweden are investigating the circumstances surrounding a car found abandoned near Hässleholm early on Thursday morning. The engine was still running and there was blood both inside and outside the car, but there was no sign of a driver or any passengers.

Police dogs are now involved in the search for any people who may have left the vehicle.

"There was blood in the car and the engine was turned on," police spokesman Hans Nilsson told news agency TT.

Police first began receiving calls about the abandoned vehicle at 4.30 a.m. on Thursday morning.

"We don't know what might have happened. But police in central Skåne have begun an investigation into serious assault.

"We now plan to check the address of the car owner," said Nilsson.

Police say the vehicle is owned by a woman in the Osby area.
