Later on Saturday morning a man was arrested on suspicion of arson.

According to the duty police officer in Dalarna the fire is thought to have been started intentionally. The fire brigade were able to stop the blaze from spreading to neighbouring apartments.

"We suspect a crime, that the fire was started in some way. But that will be shown by a forensic investigation," said Yasemin Mollaoglu, Dalarna police spokesman.

"We're working now to see if there was any motive for this. We're looking at relationships and all that kind of thing involving the woman. Our suspicions are starting to focus on one person, but I can't say any more than that right now," she said.

The woman was taken to Avesta hospital, but Yasemin Mollaoglu could not comment on her injuries. She said that the woman was conscious.

The fire in the apartment apparently began in the hallway.

"We're busy interviewing witnesses and neighbours now, to get a better impression of what happened," said Mollaoglu.

Police have not revealed any details about the relationship between the woman and the man held in custody.
