Two leading politicians have called for police to carry out an inquiry into the number of Swedish passports that have been issued on false grounds.

Justice Minister Beatrice Ask has been joined by her predecessor in the post, Thomas Bodström, in reacting strongly to reports that an unknown number of people have been issued passports containing identical personal identification numbers.

"It is of utmost impotance that the police are given greater control over the processing of passports," Ask told Dagens Nyheter.

Bodström agreed that improvements are necessary in order to safeguard the processing system.

"It shouldn't be this easy to abuse the system and I am surprised that the police have not already investigated the matter," said Bodtström.
