Young woman killed in snowmobile accident
A 20-year-old woman died early on Saturday morning after being involved in a snowmobile accident in Parkolompolo, north of Pajala.
Four people were involved in the accident, but the others escaped with mild injuries, reported local media.
The emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 3am on Saturday. The distance to Parkolompolo to the nearest hospital meant that it took a couple of hours before help arrived.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Gällivare hospital, but the injuries to her skull were so severe that she could not be saved.
A spokesman at Norrbotten police said that all of those involved in the accident came from Kiruna.
So far this year, at least eight people have died in snowmobile accidents in Sweden, according to figures from the Swedish Association of Snowmobile Owners (Snofed).
