The driver of a car was killed in a collision with a train at a level crossing on a country road that leads from Lidköping to Järpås in western Sweden.

It is not yet know whether any of the train's passengers were injured in the crash.

"I have received information from the scene of the accident that there was one person in the vehicle and that that person has died," said Thomas Thorsell from emergency services in Västra Skaraborg.

There were 71 passengers on the train, many of whom were schoolchildren.

The train is thought to have been travelling at a speed of 100km/h.

The car is reported to have been standing still on the tracks when the accident occurred at 7.45am on Thursday.
