Police have identified the body of a man found murdered in the Stockholm suburb of Alby last week.

Spokesman Mats Nyhlén would not however reveal the whether the victim was Swedish or a foreign national, or whether the crime could be linked to the criminal underworld.

"All we want to say now is that it was a man born in 1973 and that his family has been informed," said Nyhlén.

Police have begun questioning witnesses and analyzing objects recovered from the scene of the crime.

The corpse was found last Wednesday wrapped in a blue plastic Ikea bag inside a black suitcase. A member of the public called police after making the macabre find.

The body was found in a wooded area that was difficult to access. Police immediately cordoned off the area to allow an examination by forensics experts.
