The Swedes sealed Iceland’s fate early on in the match, with goals from Marcus Allbäck, Anders Svensson and Olof Mellberg all before half time. The second half delivered more of the same, with one goal from Markus Rosenberg and a second from Marcus Allbäck.
The victory puts Sweden in a good position to win a place in next year’s European Championships in Austria. The result of last week’s abandoned match against Denmark will be decided by UEFA officials, but it is widely expected that Sweden will be awarded victory.
Sweden now tops its group with 18 points. It’s next match will be against Denmark in September, followed by Liechtenstein, Northern Ireland, Spain and Latvia.
