A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in an attack in a town west of Stockholm on Thursday night. A 22-year-old man was arrested two hours later on suspicion of the killing.

The attack took place following a street fight in the town of Hallstahammar, 125 kilometres west of Stockholm. The man was stabbed in the chest shortly before midnight. He was taken to Västerås Hospital, where he died at 12:42 am.

Börje Strömberg, spokesman for Västerås Police, said that the street fight, which involved several people, had calmed down when the stabbing took place.

"According to witnesses, a person returned following the row carrying a big knife. He attacked the man and then disappeared in a car from the scene."

The suspected attacker was arrested later at a pub in central Västerås. He was due to be questioned overnight.
