The boy was at his home in Ronneby, in the far south of Sweden, while his family were at a neighbour’s house for a Midsummer party.
Exactly what happened is so far unclear, but police say they are certain that he fired the shot himself. Witness accounts back up this version of events.
“We are treating this as an accident, a misfire,” said Torbjörn Borgström of Blekinge county police.
Borgström said that the boy was sedated in hospital on Saturday morning, and would remain under sedation for another day. His condition was described as serious but stable. The gun involved in the accident belonged to the boy’s father.
