The man, reported to be around 40 years old, is reported to be in a serious condition.
The incident took place after police were alerted to a fight at an apartment in the small town near Piteå.
The police officer and his assailant were both taken to Sunderby Hospital for treatment.
Jan Karlsen, chairman of the Police Union, admitted to being shaken by the incident, which comes less than two weeks after a police officer in Nyköping was shot dead during a routine arrest.
“It is tragic when police officer are injured or give up their lives when they are trying to do what society asks of them,” he said.
