Man arrested over Gothenburg killing

A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 33-year-old man in Gothenburg on Sunday night. The man, who is 44, was arrested on Monday afternoon.

“A warrant was put out for his arrest in the morning and in the afternoon we were able to arrest him in an apartment in eastern Gothenburg,” said Sven Alhbin of Gothenburg Police.

The 33-year-old was shot at around 1:30 am on Monday. Witnesses heard several shots being fired outside an apartment block in the Kortedala area of Gothenburg. The wounded man was then able to return into the building, but died before the ambulance arrived.

Several people were in the man’s apartment at the time of the killing, but none are considered suspects.

“We questioned a number of people during the night and morning, and that led to this afternoon’s arrest,” said Sven Alhbin. Police suspect the man of murder.

Police were on Monday afternoon releasing few details of the killing, but media are reporting that the man was hit by several shots in the throat and stomach. Both the victim and the alleged attacker were previously known to police in relation to drugs offences.

“We do not know whether this had anything to do with what happened last night. We have not yet had time to start questioning the man we have arrested,” said Alhbin.
