Ford ‘weighing Volvo sale’

US auto giant Ford is weighing the sale of its Swedish Volvo car unit but there are no specific deals in the works, a spokesman told AFP.

Spokesman Tom Hoyt said Ford is in the midst of broad strategic review of all of its operations, including Volvo.

“As far as I know, we’re not any discussions with another automaker about the sale of Volvo,” added Hoyt, referring to the persistent rumours in Europe BMW has expressed an interest in Volvo.

Hoyt also said “third parties” have expressed an interest in acquiring Jaguar and Land Rover and the company is working with outside consultants to determine if a sale is advisable.

Reports suggesting Ford had set a deadline of Thursday for bids on Jaguar and Land Rover are inaccurate, he added.

“It’s not as if someone came in after the 19th, we’d say, ‘No. We aren’t taking your bid,'” he said in a telephone interview.
